Ear Keloid Scar Removal

Ear keloid scar treatment

Keloids are firm, rubbery growths due to overactive scar formation. On the ear, they can occur in the cartilage or earlobe. Ear keloids can vary in shape, size and colour: ranging from flesh to pink to dark brown. They can also be itchy or painful.

Keloids occur due to trauma to the skin - such as from an ear piercing. Keloids can grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound, become raised and can distort the shape of the ear. They occur more commonly in people with darker skin pigmentation - although the reason why is unclear.

Keloids are notoriously difficult to treat. Dr Andrew Thant is a general practitioner who has completed further training in Aesthetic Medicine and Skin Cancer Medicine. He offers a combination of surgical excision, cryotherapy and intra-lesional steroid injections to remove the keloid growth and minimize risk of recurrence. All excised growths are sent for histological analysis to rule out cancers/tumours.
